“I’ll tell you a tale!” – So begins another enchanting evening with storyteller Richard Martin, a beloved presence on the vhs Erlangen stage. Once again, he brings a brand-new programme of ancient stories – some hundreds, others even thousands of years old. Tales to laugh at, tales to wonder at – and some to make your blood run cold! Of course, all the tales are true – otherwise Richard would never tell them! Guests who hear Richard for the first time are always amazed at how easy his English is to understand. Richard tells not only throughout Europe, but the wider world - but in his own words, the Erlangen audience is simply the best! And that, he insists, is absolutely true! This talk explores the evolving discourse on children’s rights in India, focusing on the tensions between protectionist policies and children’s lived realities. While global and national frameworks often portray childhood as a phase requiring safeguarding, such narratives can obscure the agency and resistance of children themselves. We will critically examine legal and political efforts—particularly the banning of child labour—and analyze why many of these interventions fail to address the complexities of children’s lives. By highlighting grassroots movements led by children, this talk sheds light on how young people in India navigate, challenge, and reshape the systems that govern them, asserting their rights as both children and workers.
