Foster, first published in 2010, and Small Things Like These, published in 2021, are both finely etched portraits of Irish society in the 1980s. They are novellas beautifully penned by the internationally acclaimed author Claire Keegan, who handles Irish social history with oblique precision, exploring most difficult public matters in a non-secular state.

Milkman, by Anna Burns, first published in 2018, offers a totally original take on Northern Ireland during the Troubles. It is a darkly comic novel about a sectarian society seen through the eyes of a young girl and moving from the scene of public life into the intimate landscape of her mind. Bitte beachten Sie: der letzte Termin am 3. Juli findet im vhs Wohnzimmer, Friedrichstraße 17 statt.

Structural racism continues to impact almost every aspect of US society and culture. It stands at the center of much recent activism (#OscarsSoWhite, Black Lives Matter, etc.), and it constitutes a contested issue in political debates, for example, with regard to reparations, affirmative action, or school curricula. We will discuss the various dimensions and effects of structural racism as well as the significance of Critical Race Theory in contemporary discourses.

With the launch of the US environmental movement and the first Earth Day in the 1970s environmental issues became ever-present in the public sphere through a diverse array of protest methods. Especially in the US groups engaging in civil disobedience and property destruction have been labelled “eco-terrorists” from the 1980s onward. We will discuss different understandings of terrorism and what they might mean for citizens’ expression of dissent and rights to protest and debate the current backlash against climate justice activism. The First Lady has little say in US politics - yet Jackie Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, or Michelle Obama have left their mark in American culture. This presentation examines the discourses around First Ladies and how they create their own personas on the job. We discuss the power of style or their cultural diplomacy skills and relate the First Lady to narratives about white womanhood and domesticity in American culture, with an additional glance at the First Lady’s role in the 2024 Presidential Elections. These workshops are offered in English. Since the four dates of the workshop build on each other, it makes sense to attend all dates. When you leave your home country to start a new life in a new culture that has a different language, values and many other things that characterise your home environment, it is perfectly normal if you start reflecting on who you really are, what you want and to start questioning things, both what is happening around you and within you. This course is ideal for women with this kind of background. By understanding yourself better, you gain greater control over your own behaviour, thoughts and emotions. Why do you do what you do? Why do you act and react in a certain way? How does stress affect you? These are questions that will be covered in the workshops. In Kooperation mit dem Frauenzentrum Erlangen
In this talk, we will engage with multiple senses of home, of the practices and notions of home in the everyday. We will look at home within and beyond the house, how people relate to and experience their dwellings, how places are meaningful and full of significance for people. We will venture out of the seminar room to the streets and wagon homes, learn about homeless architecture and closely observe the dynamic nature of people-place relationships. Not only will we explore people’s relationships to place, its materiality and people’s definitions of home but also what home means to us. In Kooperation mit dem Frauenzentrum Erlangen
In this course, we delve deep into the lives of Indian women, their heterogeneous and unique experiences and contexts, and the grassroots feminist struggles. To shape our understanding of identity, difference, and intersectionality in the multifaceted lives of Indian women, our journey will move beyond theory, engaging with popular culture, opinion pieces, films, personal anecdotes and roundtables with firsthand narratives. Please join if you are seeking a deeper understanding of India and its multicultural society, and to discover the intertwining stories that unify us across thousands of miles, transcending time and distance.
