Let`s talk about: The American West
Mi. 27.11.2024 19:15 Uhr
Stephen Koetzing M.A.
Kursnummer 24W155009

Come along and join our discussion group at vhs club INTERNATIONAL! A short introductory presentation will offer insight into select issues and current topics in US society and culture. The following discussion will offer a great and fun way to practice your English language skills on an advanced level and to learn about different perspectives. Everyone is welcome. You don’t have to be an expert on the US, just bring an open mind and plenty of questions! Rather than specify a geographical region, the term ‘American West’ designates one of the US’s foundational mythologies: Fictionalizations, reiterations, and reappropriations of the country’s 19th-century westward expansion pervade US-American culture. As a powerful idea, the American West not only perpetuates notions of freedom and democracy, but also serves to justify US-American imperialism and supremacism. With an eye to its representations in popular culture, we will discuss how perceptions of the American West continue to influence and shape US politics and society. Mahatma Gandhis Ethik der Gewaltfreiheit und die Bedeutung in Indien heute (Vortrag)
Mo. 02.12.2024 19:00 Uhr
Prof. Dr. Clemens Jürgenmeyer
Kursnummer 24W155011

ACHTUNG: Der Vortrag muss leider verschoben werden. Die Veranstaltung findet am 2. Dezember statt.

Beyond Traditions: Stories, Struggles and Uprisings of Women in Contemporary India (Vortrag/englisch)
Mi. 29.01.2025 19:30 Uhr
Khushboo Jain
Kursnummer 24W155013

Structures of caste, class, patriarchy, and colonialism define Indian women's lives. Multiple feminist struggles in India are creating ripples of change by reclaiming public spaces, asserting pleasure, and challenging Brahmanical patriarchy and incarceration at home and in institutions, as seen in movements like Pinjra Tod. Dalit protests and movements are reshaping understandings of identity, difference, and intersectionality. This talk delves deeper into the lives of today’s Indian women, exploring their struggles, challenges, reflections, hopes, and dreams.

Women in Nepal and a Decade of Armed Conflict (Vortrag/englisch)
Di. 11.02.2025 19:15 Uhr
Khushboo Jain
Kursnummer 24W155014

This presentation delves into the role of social movements in challenging traditional gender norms, focusing on the Maoist movement in Nepal. During the Maoist movement, a significant number of women joined both state and non-state armed forces, challenging entrenched patriarchal structures. While the Maoist ideology of gender equality played a role, the argument is that the real change stemmed from the situational dynamics of war, which forced a re-negotiation of gender roles. This provides a nuanced understanding of how social movements can lead to shifts in societal norms and empowerment beyond the immediate context. In Kooperation mit dem Frauenzentrum Erlangen

Communication skills and stress management (Workshop for international women)
Sa. 09.11.2024 09:45 Uhr
Sara Thulin
Kursnummer 24W156000

These workshops are offered in English. Since the four dates of the workshop build on each other, it makes sense to attend all dates. When you leave your home country to start a new life in a new culture that has a different language, values and many other things that characterise your home environment, it is perfectly normal if you start reflecting on who you really are, what you want and to start questioning things, both what is happening around you and within you. This course is ideal for women with this kind of background. By understanding yourself better, you gain greater control over your own behaviour, thoughts and emotions. Why do you do what you do? Why do you act and react in a certain way? How does stress affect you? These are questions that will be covered in the workshops. In Kooperation mit dem Frauenzentrum Erlangen
