Come along and join our new discussion group at vhs club INTERNATIONAL! A short introductory presentation will offer insight into select issues and current topics in US society and culture – ranging from well-known historical figures to contemporary popular culture and political events. The following discussion will offer a great and fun way not only to practice your English language skills on an advanced level, but also to exchange ideas, and to learn about different perspectives.
Everyone is welcome. You don’t have to be an expert on the US, just bring an open mind and plenty of questions!
Harriet Tubman (1822 - 1913) is probably best known as a legendary conductor on the Underground Railroad who led numerous enslaved people into freedom. She, however, also participated in the Civil War as a nurse, spy, and leader, advocated for women’s rights, and founded a nursing home. We will take a close look at the various aspects of her life and specifically focus on the way she is remembered and represented in contemporary US popular culture.
