Harriet Tubman (1822 - 1913) is probably best known as a legendary conductor on the Underground Railroad who led numerous enslaved people into freedom. She, however, also participated in the Civil War as a nurse, spy, and leader, advocated for women’s rights, and founded a nursing home. We will take a close look at the various aspects of her life and specifically focus on the way she is remembered and represented in contemporary US popular culture.

U.S. military families are often featured prominently at political events, in campaign speeches, and in contemporary popular culture. They can act as “unofficial ambassadors” abroad and have contributed to U.S. war efforts at the home front.
